HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE INSTITUTE

Sri Mekapati Goutham Reddy Agricultural College (SMGRAC), Udayagiri, a constituent college of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), was established on 28 November 2022 with the objective of expanding quality agricultural education and developing skilled human resources for the agricultural sector in Andhra Pradesh. The establishment of the college marks a significant milestone in strengthening agricultural education, research, and extension services in the southern part of the state.

The institution is situated at the picturesque foothills of the historic Udayagiri Hills in SPSR Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh, and is spread over an expansive campus of 106.77 acres. The serene natural surroundings provide an ideal environment for academic pursuits, research, extension, and the holistic development of students.

The college was established following the transfer of the well-developed infrastructure and assets of the Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy Institute of Technology and Science (MeRITS), Udayagiri, to ANGRAU through the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The transferred assets included academic and administrative buildings, hostels, guest houses, staff quarters, laboratories, playgrounds, internal roads, water supply systems, electrical infrastructure, transport facilities, and other essential amenities. This strong infrastructural foundation enabled the rapid establishment and effective functioning of the institution.

The college has been named in honour of Sri Mekapati Goutham Reddy, former Minister for Industries, Commerce and Information Technology, Government of Andhra Pradesh, in recognition of his visionary leadership, dedication to public service, and significant contributions to the development of the Udayagiri region. Today, the institution continues to uphold his legacy by promoting excellence in agricultural education, innovation, and sustainable rural development.

ESTABLISHMENT

Sri Mekapati Goutham Reddy Agricultural College commenced its academic activities from the 2022–23 academic year with a vision to emerge as a centre of excellence in agricultural education. The college was established to produce competent agricultural professionals capable of addressing the emerging challenges of modern agriculture and contributing to the sustainable development of the farming community.

The institution is equipped with state-of-the-art academic infrastructure, including modern classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, instructional farms, library facilities, hostels, sports amenities, and student support services. These facilities provide a conducive environment for quality teaching, practical learning, research, innovation, and personality development.

The college is committed to imparting quality education through a balanced integration of classroom instruction, experiential learning, research, extension activities, and skill development programmes.
